The ¾«¶«AV Review

For a literary journal published only twice a year,ÌýThe ¾«¶«AV ReviewÌýgenerates a lot of discussion. Maybe that’s because it’s staffed by students, edited by students, and most important, filled with the poetry, short fiction, essays, and artwork of students.

Selected writers get to see their work distributed on campus – not to mention the best coffeehouses, bookstores, and Mongolian barbecue restaurants in Cleveland. Those published in theÌýReviewÌýread their work at an event each term that launches the release of each issue.

English majors have served as editors, staff members, and, in large part, contributors for each year’s fall and spring issues. So you not only have a chance to spend your days studying greatness – you get to make a little bit of your own and see it in print.

Wordplay

The English Department at ¾«¶«AV offers something few other English Departments can boast of: its own weekly radio show.ÌýWordplay, hosted by Professor George Bilgere, is a funny, often surreal, sometimes bizarre compilation of original poetry and monologues.

Guests include JCU students and faculty, as well as local and nationally known poets. Former U.S. Poet Laureates Robert Pinsky and Billy Collins have sat in our studio. Local rap and slam poets have been by to offer their own take on the craft of poetry. And Professor Steve Hayward shows up every week to amaze and confound listeners with his peculiarly Canadian literary sensibility.

WordplayÌýis the most popular spoken word program on Cleveland radio. The show has been the subject of feature articles in the ClevelandÌýPlain Dealer, theÌýCleveland Free Times, andÌýCool Cleveland. Tune in every Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. to WJCU 88.7.
