Communication Programs of Study
While pursuing the Communication major in the Tim Russert Department of Communication, you鈥檒l select one of three concentrations, Communication Advocacy, Digital Media, or Integrated Marketing Communication. Each area is rich in theory and practice.
Our Communication major gives you the opportunity to develop leadership, advocacy, critical thinking, and excellence in writing, speaking, and performing. Your chosen concentration will deepen your knowledge and inform your career path.
Communication advocacy ensures that the most vulnerable have their voices heard, challenges erroneous claims, safeguards rights, expresses opinions, and advances policies. It is essential to social justice, law, public policy, sales, or any career where ethical, effective persuasion leads to success.

Yes, this is a communications course, but I believe the skills acquired here will impact every student鈥檚 career and life.鈥

Every effective communication has an intended audience. This course introduces you to the many ways communicators analyze, target, develop, empower, commodify, ignore, and survey audiences. Because this is a two-sided conversation, you鈥檒l also explore the many ways in which audiences receive, interpret, create and co-create messages.
In this upper-level course, you鈥檒l separate fact from fiction by spotting bunk in ads, news, and data, and learning how to counter misinformation ethically and effectively. Case studies and a final paper will strengthen your ability to protect yourself and others from inaccuracy, and enhance your student e-portfolio.
