Peace as a goal is an ideal which will not be contested by any government or nation, not even the most belligerent.

¾«¶«AV is a founding member of the Shepherd Higher Education Consortium on Poverty (SHECP), a group of institutions dedicated to encouraging the study of poverty as a complex social problem by expanding and improving educational opportunities for college students in a wide range of disciplines and career trajectories. It integrates rigorous academic study and focused direct service with disadvantaged communities and persons. Through its programs, SHECP and its member institutions prepare students for a lifetime of professional and civic efforts to diminish poverty and enhance human capability, while also supporting connections among students, faculty, staff, and alumni engaged in the study of poverty. The Shepherd Consortium Poverty Immersion Summer Internship Program is competitive and designed to serve members of SHECP by providing eight-week internships. Interns will be matched with community non-profit and government-funded organizations whose missions address poverty in regional and national settings. Through these internships, students will increase their knowledge about poverty, its human and social costs, and ways they can act with and on behalf of the poor. Agencies represent many fields of interest including education, healthcare, legal services, housing, social and economic needs, and community-building efforts.
