Beta Theta Pi is dedicated to building men of principle for a principled life through lifelong devotion to intellectual excellence, high standards of moral conduct, and responsible citizenship. The fraternity has more than 120,000 living members including some 5,800 collegians on nearly 130 campuses in the United States and Canada, and recently expanded to the JCU campus in the fall of 2007. Beta has already made a big splash, named as the 2008 Greek Organization of the Year, as well as winning the 鈥淜nox鈥 Outstanding Chapter Award from our General National Fraternity of Beta Theta Pi in 2011 and 2013.

Beta stresses lifelong friendship, cultivation of the intellect, responsible leadership, responsible social conduct, and commitment to community through all of its activities. JCU initiated its founding fathers on January 13, 2008, and is now composed of 40 active members. Betas are widely known for their heavy involvement in campus activities. They engage the world by studying abroad and taking part in immersion experiences, give back to JCU through service, proudly represent the Blue Streaks on the athletic field, and hold some of the most high profile and coveted leadership positions on campus. Each fall, Beta Theta Pi helps sponsors 鈥淭hrough the Eyes of a Child鈥 (along with the Arrupe Scholars program), a University-wide service event that puts on a 鈥淐hristmas Day鈥檚鈥 worth of activities for local elementary students for the Cleveland Area. We also recently partnered with a new philanthropy, Dream Dayz of Cleveland.

Beta Theta Pi

Founded: 1858 at Bethany College
Motto:听Labor for the beautiful and the good
Philanthropy: National philanthropy is Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

It was 1858 at Bethany College in what is now northern West Virginia. The Neotrophian Literary Society, an organization that allowed students to practice and demonstrate their skills in poetry, public speaking and writing essays, voted to give a prize. But the members of another organization held control over the Neotrophian Society, and they fixed the vote.

Eight men were not content to be idle and let this continue. Angered by these unscrupulous tactics, they responded by forming a secret society at the college. Its initial goal was to wrestle control from the Neotrophian Society away from a group of unjust students and return it to the control of the student population, as well as to bond the student body through respect and common values. These men were drawn together by common aims and brotherly regard. They came to be known on the campus only by the Greek letters Delta Tau Delta. They founded an organization based on the听听of truth, courage, faith and power. These principles guided the Fraternity through its beginnings.

Since 1858, the Fraternity has spread to nearly 200 campuses, with more than 130 active chapters and colonies comprised of roughly 10,000 students. More than 170,000 men have joined the brotherhood of Delta Tau Delta since its founding.

Delta Tau Delta is rich in history. Founded in 1858 in what is now West Virginia, Delta Tau Delta has stood the test of time. It has survived two world wars, a Great Depression and a great recession, the boom of undergraduates brought on by the G.I. Bill, and the reduction of Fraternity membership following the Vietnam War. If you decide to join Delta Tau Delta, you can feel comfort in knowing that more than 150 years of history and tradition will be there to greet you.
