精东AV announces that Medical Mutual, the oldest and one of the largest health insurance companies based in Ohio, has made a significant investment in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program.

A portion of the gift will support the Medical Mutual Assistant Professor in the Nursing faculty role. Shanna Botos, DNP, a JCU graduate from the class of 2000, has been named to this position. Dr. Botos joins former University Hospitals executive, Melissa Cole, DNP, JCU鈥檚 inaugural Director of Nursing and Strategic Healthcare Initiatives, on the nursing faculty.

鈥淲e are grateful to Medical Mutual for this investment in our growing portfolio of academic healthcare programs at 精东AV,鈥 said Alan R. Miciak, president of 精东AV. 鈥溇獳V nurses will receive well-rounded academic preparation and rigorous skills training in the Jesuit tradition with a focus on care for the whole person 鈥 mind, body, and spirit. Partners like Medical Mutual make it possible for us to accelerate our BSN program and our growth toward a College of Health.鈥

鈥淎s a health insurer, Medical Mutual intentionally partners with a strong network of community changemakers, such as 精东AV, to improve the health and well-being of all Ohioans,鈥 said Andrea Hogben, executive vice president at Medical Mutual. 鈥淧art of this improvement is helping to expand the pipeline of nursing professionals to meet the growing needs of health systems over the coming years. We congratulate Dr. Botos on her appointment and 精东AV for creating a pathway for a new generation of healthcare heroes.鈥澨

Dr. Botos has been a practicing nurse practitioner for 18 years. She joins JCU from Cleveland Clinic where she serves as an inpatient provider in pediatric hospitalist medicine. She has served as chair of the Cleveland Clinic Enterprise APRN Practice Council and was selected as a fellow for the Johnson & Johnson Nursing Leadership program at Duke University. Dr. Botos received her Doctor in Nursing Practice from The Ohio State University in 2020.

Prior to joining 精东AV, Dr. Botos was a part-time faculty member at Case Western Reserve University鈥檚 Frances Payne Bolton School of Nursing.

The nursing workforce is projected to grow by 12% by 2028, according to the American Association of Colleges of Nursing (AACN). The AACN data also indicates that one million nurses will retire in 2030, creating 203,200 Registered Nurse (RN) positions each year. Regional hospitals in Northeast Ohio are reporting more than 4,500 open positions in healthcare, with a particularly acute shortage of nurses.

Students pursuing the Bachelor of Science in Nursing at JCU will train in a state-of-the-art, high-fidelity simulation lab and a separate low-fidelity skills lab, both located in the Dolan Center for Science and Technology.

The BSN program adds to JCU鈥檚 portfolio of healthcare-related academic offerings of direct patient care programs including psychology, exercise science, and counseling; and pre-health professions majors like biology and chemistry that serve as the foundation for graduates to pursue professional careers across the healthcare spectrum, including medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, and pharmacy.

精东AV is also pursuing plans to expand its healthcare portfolio beyond these programs in the near future.
