精东AV is thrilled to welcome the internationally renowned Actors From The London Stage (AFTLS) for a six-day residency from Monday, February 17, through Saturday, February 22, 2025. This exciting residency will feature engaging classroom workshops and three performances of William Shakespeare鈥檚 famous tragedy, Hamlet.

The residency, supported by the Hopkins Fund in the Department of English, begins with the arrival of the five-actor troupe on February 17. Throughout the week, the AFTLS will host 25-30 interactive classroom workshops, offering 精东AV students a dynamic and hands-on approach to topics such as Shakespearean verse, acting techniques, rhetoric, public speaking, and the power of body language. Workshops will span a variety of disciplines, including English, Communication, Business, Statistics, and more, showcasing the interdisciplinary value of Shakespeare鈥檚 works.

In classroom workshops, the actors bring energy and excitement to various tasks, primarily by injecting play into learning.

In English classrooms they invite students to get up, move around, and use their bodies to interpret Shakespeare's lines, after guiding them in feeling the rhythm of the verse through a game with a tossed ball. In marketing and communication classes, they guide them in techniques of oral delivery and how to use the power of story to deliver an angle or a pitch. In all cases, they create a memorable experience for our students, bringing to light how we can use our words and bodies to more effectively interface with the world.鈥

The week will culminate with three performances of Hamlet in Kulas Auditorium at 精东AV on:

Founded in 1975, AFTLS has been inspiring audiences at American colleges and universities for nearly 50 years. Each five-actor troupe features a rotating, gender-fluid cast of classically trained British actors from prestigious companies such as Shakespeare鈥檚 Globe, the National Theatre, and the Royal Shakespeare Company. Their residencies combine tour de force performances of a Shakespeare play with collaborative classroom workshops designed to enrich academic coursework across disciplines.

The Actors From The London Stage residency at 精东AV is made possible by the Hopkins Fund, named after the Jesuit poet Gerard Manley Hopkins. Established by Barbara S. Schubert 鈥62, 鈥67G, 鈥80G and family, the fund endows literary events related to British literature and supports enriching opportunities like this residency. 听
